ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA

What causes a blood
cancer like AML?

Changes in a blood-forming cell can disrupt how it matures, grows and survives. Its abnormal descendants can interfere with healthy blood production.

INSIDE THE BONE MARROW1 of 4

Blood begins here.

Your marrow contains stem and progenitor cells that produce blood through several stages of development.

Simplified selected lineages · intermediate stages omitted · not to scale

The nucleus contains DNA. AML begins in the blood-forming system, not when a mature red blood cell turns cancerous.

What am I looking at?+

The outer membrane encloses cytoplasm. Inside the nucleus, DNA is packaged with proteins as chromatin. It is not usually a collection of distinct X-shaped chromosomes.

Mature red blood cells have no nucleus. Neutrophils have a lobed nucleus. Platelets are small fragments released by megakaryocytes, not miniature white blood cells.

The diagram selects a few blood lineages. It omits many intermediate stages and other cells, including lymphocytes. It does not show a myeloblast turning into all three outputs.
